COFFHA Is Constructing Skills Acquisition Centre In Okun-Ajah

The Committee of Friends for Humanity (COFFHA) recently laid the foundation for a Skills Acquisition Centre it intends to build for widows and the less privileged within the Okun-Ajah Community in Ajah, Lagos.

Using the opportunity to hold a medical outreach for the widows in the community, the foundation gathered no fewer than 3,000 men, women and children, who benefitted from the exercise.

Speaking during the free medical exercise and ground breaking ceremony of the Vocational Training Centre, the president of COFFHA, Mrs. Carol Ufere, said it was a way of giving back to the society.

“This year is a little different in the sense that over the years we have always done widows empowerment every year during which we give widows starters packs to start off trade and then we monitor them to see that they are doing well in their various different businesses.

“But we noticed that a lot of women were getting sick without having a means to carter for themselves medically. So, we felt that it was not just enough to give them a source of income but to as well carter for their physical wellbeing. So, today we are having our ground breaking ceremony and a health outreach which is annual for us”, she noted.

Ufere explained further that after realising that some of these women were not utilising the money given to them for their businesses as planned, but expended the money on other pressing matters, the need for a skill acquisition centre arose.

“It has been difficult getting them to stay focus on their trade and so we felt that rather than give them money as such, let us empower them by building capacity in them through skills acquisition so that they can have training in specific trade.

“We felt that it is not usually okay to give people just fish but to teach them how to fish so that they can be sustainable. This would enable them have a source of income that is continuously running, so that even when you are tired, others can continue where you stopped so that you can continue to have something to eat.”

So, first of all, Ufere said the group had to buy a land with the help of its supporters, donors and benefactors, adding, “you know we cannot do it all alone. Fortunately we have people who share in our vison. So after we bought this land, we held our first health outreach in October 2018 and then the recent one in November 2019, during which we laid the foundation for the skill acquisition centre which we intend to build for the community.

“Incidentally, we are sourcing for funds to start building the structure and all we are waiting for is to get funding to be able to start the building. It has been tough, I must say. Getting the money is big challenge. But we believe and trust in God that He would make it possible.

“So, today we have invited friends who have believed in us and have graciously put their money in what we do. They did it out of faith without knowing if we would use their money for other things than said but today we have brought them here and they have seen where we have put their money, they can actually see that we are working and that they are dealing with women with integrity and we have come to show to them our labour of several years.

“Our guests have come and they have seen what we are doing, now they have the confidence that the money they have been giving us over the years, no matter how small, are now being utilised and they are very happy knowing that we are women with integrity and proven track records, who have said we are for charity and we are really doing charity”, Ufere said.

COFFHA Visits LUTH, Gives Cash Support to Indigent Sick Children

Committee of Friends for Humanity (COFFHA) in furtherance to its vision to provide humanitarian assistance to alleviate the sufferings amongst women and children, visited the Pediatric Ward, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi Araba, Lagos recently to provide emotional and financial support to indigent parents of children battling with different ailments at the hospital.

The COFFHA visit saw hope ignited among the beneficiaries as the charity organisation gave cash support to over 25 children from indigent families. The cash donation which many beneficiaries considered as a timely intervention was gladly received by parents of the sick children who expressed their gratitude for their kind gesture.

The beneficiaries include baby Joseph who has spent over 18 days in the incubator since after delivery, baby Agbeje, who has just been transferred from the incubator to a cot, a recently delivery in-born quadruplets among others.

Thanking the charity organisation for identifying with them in their time of need, one of the parents, Mrs Agbeja said the cash gift will go a long way in helping the family give their son the best treatment he needs to survive and live a healthy life.

The President, COFFHA, Mrs Carolyn Ufere, said the group, as part of its commitment to identifying with the needy amongst women and children, pays quarterly charity visits to orphans and sick people to give out cash support and other gift items to them. She said, “We usually organise a quarterly event where we give out cash, food and gift items to orphans and sick people. This time around we decided to come to LUTH and see babies that are from indigent homes to offer assistance to their families to enable them to get the needed medical treatment to overcome their predicament,” said Ufere.

Disclosing that the visit to LUTH was the third of its kind this year, Ufere said COFFHA understands how challenging it can be for parents managing sick children, especially the cost of providing adequate medical treatment. Against this backdrop among others, according to her, informed the group’s resolve for quarterly visit hospitals to give financial supports and other forms of assistance for the children.

Speaking further, COFFHA president appealed to the public, especially privileged individuals in the society, to spare a thought for the sick and show them love by extending assistance. “My message to people out there is that in whichever way and however little you can afford, please extend and give out to those who are in need. Lend a helping a hand, it goes a long way. It might not solve the entire problem but it goes a long way in affecting lives,” she said.

COFFHA Celebrates 25th Anniversary

…..Pledges to give more support to underprivileged women, children

By Ngozi Okpalakunne

The hall of Bay Lounge in Lagos was recently filled to the capacity with men and women from different walks of life who came to celebrate with the Committee of Friends for Humanity (COFFHA), a group of women who have excelled in their chosen professions, on their 25 years anniversary of existence.

The event worth its while as it gave the association opportunity to recognise and appreciate those that have supported them in the past years .

Speaking at the event, President of COFFHA, Mrs. Carolyn Akum Ufere said that her association’s vision is to bring hope and social justice where the less privileged can live in dignity and security, and added that COFFHA had been able to create a platform where the privileged can lend a helping hand to the under-privileged, thereby committing themselves to enhance better social life and livelihood in Nigeria.

Giving a brief background of how COFFHA came into existence 25 years ago, Mrs. Ufere said it was an ideal she conceived with two other women.

“ COFFHA was a dream conceived and started 25 years ago through the passion of three women who came together as friends carrying the same mandate for charity after which they invited other ladies of like minds”, she said.

The association she pointed out was made up of accomplished women of integrity in business and public service; with a mission to support, encourage and uplift the less privileged, widows and children in the society.

According to her, COFFHA has been sourcing for funds to care for the less privileged by tasking themselves, request for funds from friends as well as their husbands who have been there for them. . “It’s been a long journey this past 25 years and I’m happy today that we are still together doing the work of charity,” she added.

Ufere highlighted some of the projects executed so far by COFFHA to include : rehabilitation of a young woman called Esther and her baby who was abandoned by her parents due to teenage pregnancy; building and equipping of COFFHA emergency center at Isolo General Hospital, Lagos; refurbishment and furnishing of a 16 bed female ward at Apapa Health Center, Apapa, Lagos; donation of Kidney Dialysis Machine to Gbagada General Hospital; renovation of the Children’s ward B, General Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos.

Others were Widow Empowerment Project executed in Awka, Anambra State, and Lagos State; quarterly donation of food items and provisions to various orphanages within Lagos; donation of wheelchairs to Lagos Health Management Board, among others.

The Committee she revealed is not resting on its oars as it is planning to build an empowerment center for widows and the less privileged in the society.

In her words, “Our plan now is to build empowerment centre, the skill acquisition centre will be able to provide the necessary skills for the widows and less privileged in the society learn skills that can make them become self-sufficient, and also make them become independent without necessarily asking for alms”.

Speaking about the role of women in nation building, she said : “There is an adage that says, “when you educate a woman you educate the entire nation”, it is a whole lot, women should ensure that their children are well trained, they should support their husbands. Women should also ensure that the task they take up will impact positively on the person around them.

There is positive contribution to nation building when you have women as leaders”, she said.

Speaking earlier, the wife of Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Amosun described what COFFAH is doing as an encouragement for other women to come out and give a helping hand to the need in the society. She invited COFFHA to extend their activities to Ogun State, promising to work with the association. “We are ready to give a helping hand attires as long as it has to do with less privileged”, she added.

On her part, Mrs. Esther Oti who also spoke at the event, lauded the initiative of the women and added that their achievements so far would go a long way in ameliorating the plights of the underprivileged women and children in the country.

COFFHA Cries out for justice against rape

The Committee of Friends For Humanity (COFFHA), an interest group for women, has described as dehumanising and disgusting the infamous rape incidents taking place among children in the recent times, the latest being the one that claimed the life of a young budding and intelligent girl of 14 years old, Obiamaka Ngozika Orakwe, who was violently raped by some young men to death.

COFFHA President, Mrs. Carol Ufere who lamented bitterly over the ugly incident, noted, “As parents particularly mothers we are alarmed by this development and we feel very sad and insecure. Government must ensure the safety of our children by providing adequate security in our communities.” She stressed that incidence of rape from studies continues to gain grounds worldwide because people pretend it does not exist, adding, “We tacitly accept the degradation of women while positing some behaviour of women as the root cause of rape. There is no denying anymore that rape is endemic to our culture and calls for a drastic approach for its eradication.”

Ufere who said this was a cry to government as a matter of urgency to put in place monitoring devices and surveillance on streets, added that government at all levels should find ways to gainfully engage the many of the youths loitering the streets. “Government must put in place and carry out punitive measures to deter other youths, no matter whose children they are, from such heinous crimes. We are using this medium to, particularly implore the Lagos State Government to add to their cap of many laurels, and help put an end to this ugly menace,” COFFHA President added.

COFFHA, Ufere said was not unaware of efforts of the state government through its Domestic Violence Department to protect women from all forms of gender-based violence. While lauding the government achievements so far, COFFHA however stressed the situation at hand calls for a review of existing efforts so as not to thwart the good intentions and great achievements of the state in this area. “We are pained to see that this menace is not abetting, rather it’s on the increase to the extent that a group of young boys will brazenly break into a home in broad daylight and commit such evil. As the famous saying goes, ‘The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who in time of moral crisis choose to remain neutral’. COFFHA will not remain neutral at a time like this. Our mission is to serve individuals and families in the poorest communities in the society, drawing strength from our individual diversities, resources and experiences,” the group noted further.

COFFHA is a charity, non-profit organisation created to provide humanitarian assistance in the society. The group has built its reputation over the years, on its ability to quickly respond to needs arising in the society wherever and however it can assist without discrimination on the ground of age, political or religious beliefs. Having been involved primarily with women and children among other things since its incorporation in January 1993, COFFHA has partnered with government in fighting molestation of women and children, bringing hope and social justice to the less-privileged so they can live in dignity and security.
